Marvel’s Avengers is dead! But could this sad news hide another much more joyful one?

Summary

  • The end of a game…
  • …for the start of another

The end of a game…

It was last Friday that the ax fell… Crystal Dynamics effectively announced on January 20 that it would no longer be working on Marvel’s Avengers, the multiplayer service game which unfortunately never won unanimous support from the press and the public. If we had to expect this to happen one day, what we did not imagine was that this decision would have such an impact on the future of the game.

After two and a half years of introducing twelve of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, we will not be adding any more content or features to Marvel’s Avengers after Update 2.8 scheduled for March 31, 2023. All support will end. September 30, 2023. Crystal Dynamics.

It is therefore from September 30 that the title will be completely abandoned by its creators, but also that it will no longer be available for sale. Despite everything, note that even after this date, players who have already purchased the game will still be able to venture into the game’s single and multiplayer modes… Ultimately, that’s the most important thing.

…for the start of another

According to a report published by eXputer.com, the death of Marvel’s Avengers is more than premature; the developers still had a lot of content in stock such as the arrival of two additional characters (Captain Marvel, She-Hulk), but also several game modes and a scripted confrontation against Ultron, one of the great emblematic villains of the Marvel Universe. However, as we said in the introduction, this bad news would hide a much better one.

It has now been five years since Shadow of the Tomb Raider was released and Lara Croft, the most famous heroine in the video game world, has not been talked about. In other words, it’s starting to get long… This is where the team that was in charge of Marvel’s Avengers comes in, since according to this same report, she would come to lend a hand to another team of Crystal Dynamics to accelerate the development of the next Tomb Raider – a game that would be in development for much longer than we think.

This information – which is naturally to be taken with a grain of salt – has also been confirmed by Miller Ross, an informed leaker to say the least. The latter has indeed recently announced that the members who worked on Marvel’s Avengers will come to the aid of two different projects: the next Tomb Raider therefore, but also Perfect Dark which would currently face a particularly agitated development.
