Summer Game Fest 2022: Did The Last of Us Part 1 leak spoil the party?

Game News Summer Game Fest 2022: Did The Last of Us Part 1 leak spoil the party?

One of the major events of Summer Game Fest 2022 this Friday, June 9 was probably the remake of The Last of Us Part I. But the surprise was not there.

Last night, in the absence of E3, Geoff Keighley once again took the reins of the annual conferences with the launch of the Summer Game Fest. An evening made of science fiction, horror games in space (too much for some) and a remake of The Last of Us already leaked upstream. What was to be a surprise announcement in a slew of trailers with the same flavor was finally expected by everyone for several hours. Did the leak spoil the party?

Leak Timeline

What would a great conference be without a gigantic leak finally? Remember last year, the Starfield release date and trailer leaked just minutes before the Xbox show opened. But this time, the timing leaves a bitter taste. Because The Last of Us Part I was saved for the end of the event, as the icing on the cake. “The leak that spoiled the surprise“, “disappointment of The Last of Us leak when it would have been THE closing of the opening ceremony“, can we read in reaction on the networks. And inevitably, when the course of the evening already lacks convincing in its entirety, the indignation redoubles. The natural euphoria of the last announcement is ruined. And then of course, the person officially sharing the information usually does a much better job of presenting it than the person leaking it.

On June 8, the eve of the Summer Game Fest, a mysterious insider (The Snitch) but with a solid background released some crisp information: a remake of The Last of Us would be announced during Geoff Keighley’s show with a release date: September 2, 2022 on PlayStation 5 and PC. The rumor therefore spreads like wildfire on the net and is perfectly credible. The previous week, this same insider brilliantly leaked the perfect entire line-up of Sony’s State of Play. And then a few hours before the ceremony, the leak is getting stronger. Screenshots are making the rounds on the ResetEra site. For Sony and PlayStation, the fate persists and a slew of details escape from their private files: a special edition called “Firefly” would also include the DLC “Left Behind”, a reissue of the comic book The Last of Us : American Dream #1 with an original cover, all in a steelbook case, also in limited edition. The set would enjoy a “total overhaul of the original experience” with “modernized gameplay, improved controls and expanded accessibility options”.

spoiled surprise

It is Neil Druckmann, co-founder of Naughty Dog, who will come to confirm the news in person on the set of the opening ceremony. “Everything was redone from scratch“, tells us the developer. We discover transformed faces and seemingly more realistic acting performances. Naughty Dog also promises us a brand new artificial intelligence for enemies and characters in clashes, while the gameplay has been modernized. Finally, the features specific to the PS5, namely 3D audio, adaptive triggers and haptic feedback from the DualSense will also be used. Druckmann will take the opportunity to announce that he is still working on games on his side, dwelling on a fatality that is difficult to fight: It’s a little too early to talk about it. Maybe if someone from PlayStation wants to leak it then we could talk about it now, but otherwise we’ll save that for later.
