If you like experiences that are out of the ordinary, you know that 2022 has been pretty generous in this regard! Between Inscryption, The Stanley Parable or Pentiment, there was plenty to do… Well, imagine that next year won’t be outdone. So here are the crazy-weird games of 2023.

Mythwrecked Ambrosia Island

When the creators of Röki decide to tackle Greek mythology, it gives Mythwreckedan amazing adventure-narrative game where you have to make buddy-buddy with the gods. Because yes, they are currently going through an identity crisis, you must take the time to find them, discuss with them and recreate the bond that unites them. To do this, in the skin of the “beginner hiker” Alex you can count on the radar signal of the Ambrosidex… In addition to new knowledge, you will be led to find secrets, to solve puzzles. The Polygon Treehouse team announces from the outset a quality writing and a “moving story”. The least we can say is that the proposal does not lack originality with gods that promise to be really funny.

Ravenlock

Announced during the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase 2022, you may remember Ravenlock, which will be available from launch on Game Pass. It is an action-RPG which also draws its inspiration from tales. We embody Ravenlok, who finds himself immersed in a strange world after having crossed a mirror. A dark world, ravaged by corruption. We are promised everything we can expect from the genre: exploration, challenge, bosses, levels to win, quests. Above all, what we remember is that so particular visual style based on “3D pixel art”, the atmosphere unhealthy but somehow lovely! All in all, we could have a very good surprise.

Atomic Heart

The next game is quite well known, but impossible not to include it in this selection! Atomic Heart, does that ring a bell? It is an open-world first-person shooter game developed by Mundfish studio. On the program: Soviet robots with a completely crossed out design who are not going to give you any gifts… “Secret experiments have spawned mutant creatures, gigantic machines and super-powerful robots in the shadows” can we learn on Steam. “You are the only one to stop them.” To help you, you have a gauntlet of power and an arsenal of weapons, for gameplay reminiscent of Bioshock. In Atomic Heart, each fight seems to be a source of surprise, fascination and challenge. Can’t wait to see what it can do.

skate story

In video games, embody a demon, we know. But a skateboarding demon, it seems to us that this is a first… Yet it is the (bizarre) concept proposed by Skate Story, developed solo by Sam Eng | published by Devolver Digital. The description on Steam couldn’t be clearer: “You are a demon made of glass and suffering in the Underworld. Evil gave you a skateboard and a simple task, ride to the moon and swallow it to be set free”. Along the way, you will meet other tormented souls, but above all master your board from A to Z. As can be seen in the trailer, the figure physics seem at the height of realism – arguably as good as in Session. Then there’s this amazing art direction. In short, a UFO.

Thirty Suitors

Although on the surface, Thirsty Suitors looks like a colorful and narrative game like any other, it is actually a real electric battery. Because yes, the Outerloop project, edited by Annapurna, mixes three genres that have – normally – nothing to do together: fighting, skating and cooking ! You read that right… According to the Steam page, it’s “a game about culture, relationships, family pressures and self-expression” where you play as Jala, a young woman. During the versus fighting phases, you will thus have to fight “punks, suitors and exes”. As for skateboarding, it seems to be about exploration with challenges, mysteries, other punks. Finally, on the kitchen counter side, there’s talk of “impressing your mom and fixing your relationship” as part of “action-packed segments.” It obviously remains to be seen how these three genres will mix.

The Plucky Square

Very quickly reminiscent of a certain “RPG Time The Legend of Wright”, The Plucky Squire is based on a simple but super catchy concept: the characters from a storybook (Laïus | his friends) who realize that another world exists, by beyond the back cover. Basically, the 2D phases over the pages give way to 3D exploration, in a child’s room! In all this, the hero will have to fight the dreadful Ragecuite and give his story a “happy ending”… In addition to a absolutely irresistible visual style, The Plucky Squire seems to offer quite varied phases with boxing, shoot’em up, archery. Yes, the whole thing looks like a breath of fresh air.

Little Devil Inside

We end with a project that we’ve been hearing about for a long time and that we can’t wait to see happen: Little Devil Inside. Remember, at the end of 2021 on the PlayStation side, we had the right to a nice sequence of gameplay, then nothing. As a reminder, the software is presented as a mixture of action, adventure, survival, RPG. In the latest trailer, we can see imaginary creatures (like a kraken, skeletons) and a adventure that promises to be rather originalbetween train travel, breaks by the fire, galleys in the snow… To this day, it is still complicated to really understand what we have to do, but one thing is certain: we want much more!
