Glaucoma is the second cause of blindness in France, after macular degeneration (AMD). If 800,000 patients are already treated, specialists estimate that at least 400,000 people are affected without knowing it. This pathology, which gradually destroys the optic nerve in the eye, affects 2% of people over 40 and 10% of people over 70. Glaucoma cannot be cured, but there are many effective treatments to prevent or delay the onset of blindness – provided they are implemented before the first loss of visual field.
From the age of 40, or when presbyopia makes its appearance, the good reflex is therefore to go to a specialist for a check-up: if all the indicators are normal, a visit every 3 to 5 years will suffice to detect glaucoma early.
