For the first time this season, Antoine Griezmann started in the derby against Real Madrid (1-2 defeat) on Sunday in La Liga. What finally hope for an agreement between Atltico Madrid and FC Barcelona for his possible transfer? The Catalan press is not so sure.
Antoine Griezmann is not out of the woods.
Surprise the announcement of the line-ups on Sunday evening. Accustomed to starting matches on the bench this season, Antoine Griezmann (31) was in the eleven of Atletico during the derby against Real.
Despite the defeat (1-2) at home, the striker on loan from FC Barcelona had to savor this first tenure which suggested an agreement on the right track for his possible transfer.
Atltico wouldn’t have changed their plans
But according to Mundo Deportivo, the situation hasn’t changed. Atletico reportedly still intend to limit the Frenchman’s playing time.
Remember that Griezmann’s loan contains a purchase option (€40m) which would become automatic if he played at least 50% of the matches for which he is available over his two seasons on loan to Madrid. The percentage reached 83.3% at the end of the previous year, and has dropped to 70.4% according to calculations by the Catalan media.
Rare exceptions for Griezmann
A way for Atletico to force Bara to reduce the amount of the possible transfer. Apparently, the strategy will remain similar after the international break. The only difference is that Diego Simeone would be allowed to start Griezmann for big games like the derby on Sunday. The Colchoneros believe that they have a certain margin that will not prevent them from falling below 50%.
Of course, an injury to the French international could thwart their plans. But in the meantime, the former Real Sociedad player risks being confined to the bench until the hour mark. It would be another blow for the striker and his Argentinian coach, totally satisfied with Griezmann’s performance since start of the season.
